Learn about the Survivors’ and Dependents’ benefits. If you’re the child or spouse of a Veteran or service member who has died, is captured or missing, or has disabilities, you may be able to get Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, or DIC for short, is a monthly benefit that can be paid to survivors of vets who were killed on active duty and for survivors of veterans who died from service-connected disabilities or had a 100 percent disability rating for a period of time before death. This benefit is also tax-free.
